Objective

The training will offer you in-depth knowledge about the 3G and 4G air interface and their protocols and possible security threats and attacks.

Course outline

Day 1 and Day 2 combined -

You will encounter deep learning into 3G and 4G security aspects such as:

• 3G and 4G security features and their strengths and weaknesses
• Using SW and HW tools for protocol-level security research
• 3G and 4G network setup and operation with commercial mobile devices
• Different attacks against the end-devices and the mobile network
• Implementation specific problems in mobile networks
• Probing commercial network configuration and potential issues

What to bring?

• Laptop with Ubuntu 16.10 installed or Laptop with USB Virtualbox installed.
• USB3 ports and administrator rights needed.
• 3G and 4G supported smartphone/s
• If available a USRP B210 or B200 mini

Prerequisites

IT security background and with minimal knowledge on wireless communications in general.

What to expect?

During the training you will get the opportunity to experience practical operation of a real network with commercial mobile phones. Software tools will be provided in the training which allows you to

• Running your own 3G or 4G network
• Connecting your phones to and learn telco protocols at each layer
• Monitor protocol messages between network and the mobile device using wireshark

About the Trainers

Altaf Shaik

Altaf Shaik is a principal security researcher at Kaitiaki Labs and currently pursuing PhD at the Technical University of Berlin. He is experienced in analyzing cellular network technologies from radio to networking protocol layers. His recent renowned research includes low-cost 4G IMSI catchers and security issues in several cellular baseband chipsets.

Dr. Ravishankar Borgaonkar

Dr. Ravishankar Borgaonkar works as a chief scientist at Kaitiaki Labs. He holds a position as a research fellow at University of Oxford and undertakes research in securing next (5th) generation mobile networks. His primary research themes are related to mobile telecommunication and involved security threats. This ranges from 2G/3G/4G network security to end-user device security. He received his PhD in security in telecommunication area at TU Berlin.
